  • Understanding Veteran's Preference

    • According to Chapter 657 of the Texas Government Code, individuals who qualify for veteran’s preference are entitled to preference in employment with the University over other applicants who do not have greater qualifications.

    • Step 1 - Search Job Postings

      Search for job postings in the Texas State Jobs website to apply for either staff, faculty, or student positions.

      Step 2 - Indicate Veterans' Preference

      Indicate eligibility for Veteran's Preference; select either 'Yes' or 'No' in your online application. Once complete please email Vets@txstate.edu with your name, the position name and posting number, and that you are asserting Veteran’s Preference.  This will allow the Veteran Hiring Coordinator to track your application.

      Step 3 - Interview Eligibility

      In order to be considered for an interview, all applicants must meet all required qualifications as specified in the job posting. If the total number of applicants interviewed for a position is 6 or fewer, at least 1 of those applicants must be a qualified individual eligible for Veteran’s Preference. If the total number of applicants interviewed for a position is more than 6, at least 20% of the total number of those applicants must be qualified individuals eligible for Veteran’s Preference.

      Step 4 - Hiring Decision

      If two applicants are finalists for a position, and are equally qualified (except only one is eligible for veteran’s preference), the applicant utilizing veteran’s preference is selected for hire.

How to apply for a job as a veteran:

Search for positions through the Texas State Jobs website and apply for either staff, faculty, or student positions.

Indicate eligibility for veteran’s preference by selecting either "yes" or "no" in your online application. 

Veteran's Preference Eligibility:

Texas State provides preference in employment to:

  • veterans, including veterans with disabilities;
  • veterans’ surviving spouses who have not remarried, and;
  • orphans of veterans who were killed on active duty.
